ʿAzāzīl (عزازيل) and Iblīs (إبليس)

ʿAzāzīl is the real name for the Iblīs, while the Iblīs is his appellation.

He is called as “Iblīs” as to his giving up on Allah’s blessing.

If you ask what is the meaning for ʿAzāzīl, then i am sorry, i could not find anything regarding that in the aged dictionary.

Is Iblīs is the name of Arab or not? There were disagreement of opinion for this matter. Among of the linguistic scholar said that it is, but it had no inflection for that, while another opinion state that it is not.

a) Muʿjam Dīwān al-Adab :

سُمِّي إبْليسُ لأنه أَبْلَسَ من رَحْمَة الْله، أَي: يَئِس، واسمُه عَزازيل

b) Aṣ-Ṣiḥāḥ Tāj al-Luġhoh wa Ṣiḥāḥ al-ʿArobiyyah :

أَبْلَسَ من رحمة الله، أي يَئِسَ. ومنه سمِّي إبْليسُ، وكان اسمه عَزازِيلُ.

c) Šams al-ʿUlūm wa Dawāʾ Kalām al-ʿArob Min al-Kulūm :

قال أبو عبيدة: سمّي إِبْلِيسَ لأنه أبلس من رحمة الله أي يئس، وهو اسم عربي لم ينصرف لأنه لا نظير له، ويقال: إِن اسمه عَزَازِيل. وقال غيره: هو اسم أعجمي، ولذلك لم ينصرف.

d) Mukẖtār aṣ-Ṣiḥāḥ :

ب ل س: (أَبْلَسَ) مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ أَيْ يَئِسَ، وَمِنْهُ سُمِّيَ (إِبْلِيسُ) وَكَانَ اسْمُهُ عَزَازِيلَ.

e) Tāj al-ʿUrūs :

مِنْهُ اشتقاقُ إبْليس لَعَنَه اللهُ لأنّه يَئِسَ من رحمةِ الله ونَدِمَ، وَكَانَ اسمُه من قَبْلُ عَزازِيلَ، أَو هُوَ أعجمِيٌّ مَعْرِفةٌ، وَلذَا لم يُصرَف

f) Lisān aḷ-ʿArob :

وأَبْلَسَ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّه أَي يَئِسَ ونَدِمَ، وَمِنْهُ سُمِّيَ إِبْلِيسُ وَكَانَ اسْمُهُ عزازيلَ

g) Muntakẖob Min Ṣiḥāḥ al-Jawhariy :

أَبْلَسَ من رحمة الله، أي يَئِسَ. ومنه سمِّي إبْليسُ، وكان اسمه عَزازِيلُ.
